Long-Range Proton Channels Constructed via Hierarchical Peptide Self-Assembly
Summary
Cyclic peptides designed with fourfold symmetry self-assemble into aligned nanotubes, and the spaces between them form proton channels micrometres long. Acidic and basic side chains lining the channels build hydrogen-bonded water chains, and fixed counter-ions add protons and water, so the transfer rates approach those of natural protein channels; the recyclable, biocompatible material is proposed for energy, biomedical and bioelectronic uses.
