Influence of coating structure of an SiOx barrier coating on a PET substrate on water vapor permeation activation energy
Summary
Five plasma-polymerised silicon-based barrier coatings on PET, ranging from silicon-organic to silicon-oxidic, are compared to see how their structure sets the activation energy of water vapour permeation. Positron annihilation spectroscopy gives the free volume and QCM the coating density; the oxidic coatings are denser and act as barriers, while the organic ones barely change permeation, with one oxygen-rich coating standing out.
