Electrophoresis and Quartz Crystal Microbalance Instrumentation to Sense Nanoplastics in Water
Summary
Nanoplastics in water can be pulled onto a QCM electrode by electrophoresis and weighed as a drop in resonance frequency. Masking most of the electrode so that the particles collect on a small central area raises the sensitivity; the method told polyethylene-spiked bottled and mineral water apart from clean samples, with Raman spectroscopy and microscopy confirming where the particles settled.
