Effects of crosslink density in zwitterionic hydrogel coatings on their antifouling performance and susceptibility to silt uptake

Zwitterionic hydrogel coatings of a sulfobetaine methacrylate were cross-linked with increasing amounts of a benzophenone photo-crosslinker. In both laboratory assays and field tests, a denser network improved antifouling performance against proteins, diatoms and barnacles, showing that rigidity and swelling matter as much as the polymer chemistry.
