Effect of Added Salt and Hydrophobic Comonomer on the Synthesis and Adsorption Behavior of Cationic Sterically-Stabilized Nanoparticles
Summary
Cationic, sterically stabilised diblock copolymer nanoparticles (METAC stabiliser, benzyl methacrylate core) are made by RAFT aqueous emulsion polymerisation, some with lauryl methacrylate added to make them amphiphilic. QCM measurements on planar silica show that added salt screens the charge repulsion, giving better-defined particles and stronger adsorption, and the hydrophobic comonomer raises surface coverage further, although surface aggregates appear at 100 mM KCl.
