Tweaking the Water Rigidity at Noble Metal Interfaces for Enhanced Alkaline Hydrogen Production via myo-Inositol Coating – A Bioinspired Approach
Summary
A coating of myo-inositol, a cyclic sugar that does not conduct, makes platinum as active for hydrogen evolution in alkaline water as it is in acid, and works on gold too. QCM measurements show the sugar forms a single adsorbed layer, and in-situ infrared spectroscopy shows it loosens the hydrogen-bond network of interfacial water, easing the slow kinetics of alkaline electrolysis.
